Fantastic value mid-range phone –

First, with the Honor 20th, you get Google’s mobile services (GMS) right out of the box. This means you get the standard pre-installed GMS applications, such as Google Search, Google Chrome, Google Map, YouTube and the very important Google Play Store. Let’s see what else the Honor 20 has to offer.

Honour 20th Phantom Blue

Does the Honor 20th send a smartphone with GMS?

The short answer is YES. Once installed you will have direct access to Google Search, Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Drive, YT Music, Movies & TV, Duet, Photo Documents, Sheets, Slides and Calendar. During installation, especially when you log in to Gmail, you will be prompted to install the Google files and back up your device with Google Drive. The most important thing, however, is access to the Google Play Store, which allows you to install all applications published there. With access to the main applications of Google Mobile Services and many others, you can no longer get Android phones.

It depends on when the phone was placed on the market and when the US government imposed the trade ban. In May 2019, the government forbade companies from working with Huawei and Honor, blocking access to Google’s mobile services and updates. The Honor 20, the Honor 20 for and with him the Honor 20 was released on the 21st. May 2019 announced in China. This phone and other Huawei and Honor smartphones released in May 2019 or earlier will have access to the services of Google Play Store, Google Wizard and updates.

Honor smartphones with MSG support include Honor 9x, Honor 9x lite, Honor 20 Pro, Honor 20 and Honor 20e. The Honor 9x Pro, which was launched later, has no GMS access and must rely on Huawei’s application gallery, phone clone and backup recovery option.

Honour 20 vs. Honours 20

The Honor 20 is the budgetary version of the Honor 20. Compared to the two phones, the shortened version of the Honor 20e has a slower processor, less RAM and storage, a lower resolution camera, no macro lens and a smaller battery. It also has a slightly smaller screen, with a dew pattern, to catch the camera from the front. The Honor 20 uses a pinhole screen. In terms of price, the Honor 20th is 44% cheaper than the Honor 20th, almost half the price of his brother or sister. To compare the specifications of the two smartphones, see the table below.

Honour 20th vs. Honour 9X Lite

To find out more about features and pricing, let’s see how the Honor 20th compares to the Honor 9X Lite. Both phones are powered by the same mid-range Kirin 710F chip with 4GB RAM. The differences are that the Honor 9X Lite has a larger 6.5-inch screen, but a horrible iPhone such as notch, a double storage capacity of 128GB, dual-band WiFi support and a larger battery of 3,750 mAh. However, the Honor 20e has an advantage over the Honor 9X Lite with an extra wide-angle lens for the triple rear camera configuration. The Honor 9X Lite is only equipped with a double rear view camera.

Now that we know where the Honor 20th is, let’s take a look at the phone.

20th – detailed overview

The mid-range Honor 20th smartphone provides access to the heart of Google’s mobile services (GMS) with a few offerings. It is powered by the 12 nm Kirin 710F chip and runs on Android 9.0 (Pie) with EMUI 9.1. The hardware and software are a bit outdated, but they work well together and offer high speed and free memory to run multiple applications at the same time.

What’s in Box?

At first glance, the phone comes in a nice package that offers sufficient protection. It is also well designed with plastic covers, cable ties and various compartments for the phone itself, documentation, charger and charging cable. When stickers are placed on the front of the display and on the back to show functions and instructions, they can easily be removed by means of a screw lock. See the photo gallery below for unpacking.

It even comes with a transparent silicone case that protects the plastic back without significantly increasing the thickness of the phone. To protect the screen from scratches, a special screen protector made of glass foil is also applied. These are things you don’t have to worry about from day one. You don’t have to search long for a suitable cover and you can easily buy hard glass film from a third party supplier to protect, apply and repair the screen.

Power

The 12 nm Kirin 710F chip features an octa-core processor with four powerful Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.2 GHz and four efficient Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7 GHz. It is connected to the Mali-G51 MP4 GPU. In terms of RAM and storage, it has over 4 GB of RAM and a standard 64 GB read-only memory. Together, they provide a responsive user experience: fast application loading and switching, fast web browsing, and smooth streaming video playback.

Geekbench5 Ere20e Result

1. 20th Geekbench 5 Benchmark Score

Geekbench 5 has placed the processor at 333 and 1343 points for single and multi-core processors respectively. In the OpenCL-ranking he could score 1.021 points. We switched to power mode under the battery settings before performing these reference tests. In terms of performance, this places the phone between the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 and the Samsung Galaxy S8. In terms of multi-core performance, it falls between the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8, which are all respectable smartphones, flagships of their time. In OpenCL computer benchmarks, performance is comparable to the mid-range but more expensive Samsung Galaxy A71 based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 (see below).

2. Honour 20th 3DMarkBenchmark results

Also in the performance section we performed the 3DMark test, Sling Shot Extreme, and as expected the Honor 20th got an average score of 1080. The average value for all Android devices is 2140. The Sling Shot Extreme is a stimulating reference. It runs OpenGL ES 3.1 with a score of 989, but what’s really impressive is that it exceeds 72% of the phones in this test.

In case you’re wondering: The Honor 20th scored 1502 points on the standard sling shot. This value is better than 56% of the results obtained with all other devices. Note that the phone is called Huawei Honor 10i in the 3DMark application. We were unable to perform other tests such as Wild Life and Wild Life Stress Test because they require Android 10 or higher.

3. 20th Benchmark Pass Mark

Finally, we achieved the following results with version 3 of the Passmark.com mobile performance test. The total system average is 5,463 points. Three important measures: Processor on a respectable 198964, memory on 13633 and RAM on 26336. In terms of GPU performance, the Honor scored 20th 8423 in 2D graphics tests and 1747 in 3D graphics tests. The values are scaled according to V2.

4. Honorary 20th AnTu v8 reference result

Although we didn’t run the AnTu v8 benchmark on the device itself, it scored according to nanoreview.net in 196298 in their list of smartphones with the Kirin 710F. These are mainly mid-range devices from Huawei and Honor. It ranks second just below the Honor 30i, but far surpasses all other Huawei and Honor phones, including the Honor 9X Lite in eighth place. You can learn more about the benchmark in nano review.

Version

The phone is very thin, measuring just 8mm, and its footprint is not much different from the iPhone XR, which is 154.8mm high and 73.6mm wide. But don’t forget that the phone is equipped with a large 6.21 inch screen. The iPhone XR is 150.9 mm high and 75.7 mm wide and has a 6.1-inch screen. The current iPhone 12 is 146.8 mm high and 71.5 mm wide, but has a 6.1-inch screen. Good size. Not too big or too high, so you have difficulty reaching part of the screen with one hand. Plus, it fits comfortably in your pocket without coming out.

At the back, the triple lens camera and flash are aligned from top to bottom to the left, while the fingerprint sensor is located in the center of the phone. At the bottom of the phone you will find a 3.5 mm audio jack, charging port and speaker, in that order from left to right. The on/off and volume keys are located at the right edge of the phone. The plastic back is a bit of a magnet for fingerprints, especially on our midnight black model. It probably won’t be as visible with the phantom blue version. The transparent silicone tube did not help, because it also suffers from stains.

Display

The IPS display offers high sharpness and clarity. He’s got a dewdrop I like better than the big, ugly cut in the apple. This is a 6.21 inch screen that is actually full screen, at the edges, with the exception of a slightly larger chin strap (bottom). This gives the Honor 20e a screen to body ratio of more than 90%. In terms of detail and colour, the IPS panel gives you a Full HD+ resolution with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. Watching Full HD 1080p video on your screen is pure fun.

We see a slightly subdued area on the screen near the bottom panel and around the dew drip notch. It’s only clear if you have a completely blank past. The screen is unaffected and you can hardly notice it while watching streaming videos on your favorite YouTube channel.

The color is vibrant, the movement is fairly smooth and shockproof, and you can easily adjust the brightness when looking outside. By default, the video is played in mailbox mode, but you can pinch and zoom to get a full picture. However, you will notice a dewdrop if you do this. Elsewhere, the display is certified by TÜV Rheinland, which means it reduces blue light emissions to protect vision and prevent stress, especially when used in low-light conditions.

We recommend setting the bed mode under Settings > Display > Eye comfort and using the blue light filter on a schedule. You can also set the sleep mode under Settings > Digital Well-being and Parental Controls. Set the snooze time to turn off the phone and set the screen to gray level.

The display of the Honor 20e is covered with a protective glass foil. So there was no need to look around or have trouble applying the exhibition. The only negative point is that our glass foil is placed a bit out of the middle, but you only notice that when you look closely. What’s more, the side-by-side display and gestures instead of the three navigation buttons allow you to really feel the edge of the glass as you move from the edges (left, right or down) to the centre.

Cameras

The three-lens rear camera with AI really jumps out and steals the show here. We had so much fun taking pictures on the phone. The main shooter is a 24-megapixel camera with a wide-angle lens (F/1.8) and a Quadra-CFA sensor that can record video at 480 frames per second, exceptional night shots and an ISO increase of 1.8 microns. If you shoot

The second camera is an 8-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens of 17mm and an aperture of F/2.4. This allows you to capture ultra-wide images, such as landscapes or even close-up portraits. The effective angle is 120 degrees. If you are shooting with an ultra-wide-angle lens, do not be afraid if the image in the frame suffers from a fisheye effect. This is corrected by the camera software.

The third camera, a 2-megapixel sensor with F/2.4, is a phased autofocus (PDAF) camera. This allows you to quickly and accurately focus on your subject and shoot sharper with the main camera and wide-angle lens.

In the next article we will go deeper into the operation of the camera. Here are some of the Super Night Shots taken with the Honor 20th.

Night scenes from the film Portrait

Night scenes

As for the standalone camera, the single AI shooter makes a beautiful portrait with a choice of different bokeh effects. Simply follow the on-screen instructions to keep the camera stable for low-light shooting while refining the image.

Facial timer

There is a disclaimer for facial disclosure and specific facial recognition settings. There is a disclaimer for the first one. Based on the basic image, with only one front camera, you can unlock the phone by a person or something, which is less secure than a model, a PIN code and a password. Facial recognition also works poorly in low light, long distances or different viewing angles. With regard to the specific Face Detection setting, you can activate the Pick up to wake up function; under the right conditions, the device will automatically wake up with Face Detection and a connection will be established. We don’t have a problem using the face release. We could quickly unlock the device and had to drag and drop it, like an iPhone, to access the home screen.

Thanks to the pick-up to wake up function and facial recognition, you can quickly unlock the phone by simply lifting the handset and looking at the display.

Fingerprint sensor

An alternative to unlocking the face is to scan and register your fingerprints. Since the sensor is located on the back of the phone, you can quickly get used to selecting your phone and naturally placing your index finger on the sensor to unlock the phone. This works even better with the included transparent housing, because you can quickly feel and locate the sensor through the hole in the housing. It’s my favorite way to unlock my phone. Unlike unlocking the face, you don’t have to slide your finger up to access the Home screen. Instead, when you pick up the handset and place your finger on the sensor, you switch directly to the home screen.

Battery life

With average use, the battery will last a day and a half, even when turned on. This is confirmed on the onboard battery settings page, which has a full charge of 35 hours. This value decreases to 33 hours and 15 minutes when entering low-power mode and increases to 43 hours and 50 minutes when the low-power mode is selected.

It does not allow fast charging, but with the included 10W charger and USB cable, the battery is ready to be reused in less than 2 hours. Our only disappointment is the use of the microUSB 2.0 port for data loading and transfer. There is no reversible C-type USB port and no cable. For this price you can’t complain.

Conclusion

There’s a lot to love about the Honor20e. You may not get 5G connectivity or WiFi 6 are features reserved for leading smartphones, but it’s still a draw. The camera works better than expected. Low brightness helps in super-night mode, but only if the subject remains relatively still. The clear, high-resolution display delivers crisp, clear images and smooth video playback. Overall, the phone works better than expected, with excellent battery life. In addition, dual-SIM support with the ability to add a microSD card is a bonus. For this price, you can’t go wrong. If you need a full interpreter, you’ll get the Honor 20th, your bank account will thank you.
